Cukurova University: Academic Units

The Faculties

The Faculty of Dentistry

The Faculty of Dentistry, which was established in 1993, started providing education for a total of 20 students in the academic year of 1995-1996. The faculty consists of Conservative Dentistry, Prosthesis Dental Treatment, Orthodontics, Oral Maxillo-Facial Surgery, Periodontology, Pediatric Surgery and Oral Implantology units. At present, it has 6 academic staff. A clinic equipped with modern equipment has recently been opened.

The Faculty of Education

The Faculty of Education

This faculty was founded in 1982 and embodied the three colleges: Iskenderun, Tarsus, and Adana Foreign Languages. It started with 16 lecturers in its foundation year, and now has 95 academic staff members. The faculty specifically aims to train teachers for institutions of elementary, secondary and higher education.

Students receive preparatory language education in related foreign language in the faculty Departments of English, French and German.

The Faculty of Science and Letters

The Faculty of Science and Letters

The Faculty of Science and Letters was founded as the Basic Sciences; the name was later changed to the Faculty of Science and Letters. Here, 133 academic staff members are employed.

In the faculty, there are Biology, Physics and Chemistry laboratories, a computer room, a canteen, two study rooms and a seminar library open mainly to students from the Department of Turkish Language and Literature.

Students graduating from any department of the faculty are entitled to teach not only in state schools, but also in private schools connected with the Ministry of National Education.

The Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences

The Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences

This faculty came into being in 1982 as a result of a merge of the Adana Academy of Commercial and Economics Sciences (founded in 1967) and the Faculty of Administrative Sciences of Çukurova University.

The faculty is presently located in the city center, and its 12.000 m2 new premises are still under construction on the university campus. The faculty has 61 academic staff members.

The objective of the faculty is to train qualified personnel eligible for recruitment in state and private sectors in the field of economics such as effective use of resources, management of goods planning, services, production and distribution. Depending on students' demand, practical training opportunities are provided in various industrial and service institutions. In addition, successful students are sent abroad for further study through the international training committee AIESEC, which functions in the faculty. Among the facilities of the faculty are two computer rooms with fifteen personal computers in each, a library with 19.000 books, a seminar hall, a dining room and a canteen.

The Faculty of Theology

Founded in 1992, the Faculty of Theology began providing instruction in 1994, and presently 23 academic staff members are employed. Students who graduate from this faculty may work as divinity teachers in all schools connected to the Department of Religious Affairs, as preachers, as muftis, ( a mufti is an official cleric in Islamic Law who is in charge of Islamic affairs in a province or district), as religion officials in the internal and foreign units of the Department of Religious Affairs, as teachers of Koran courses and/or as experts in fields related to old manuscripts and records in the archives of various state ministries.

The Faculty of Fine Arts

The Faculty of Fine Arts is soon to be set up.

The Faculty of Engineering and Architecture

This faculty was founded as Faculty of Engineering, and has been functioning as the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture since 1982, at which time it was united with the Faculty of Engineering Sciences and Adana Economic and Commercial Sciences Academy.

The faculty has 169 academic staff members.

The main goal of the faculty is to introduce new developments and breakthroughs in science and technology to its students. Another indispensable objective is to train engineers and architects through highly disciplined education.

Among the facilities of the faculty are two computer rooms and laboratories of construction, mechanics, geology, mining, textile, electric and electronics.

The Faculty of Fisheries

The Faculty of Fisheries was founded in 1985 as the College of Fisheries of Çukurova University, and provides a one-program education under the name of Engineering of Fisheries. The name of the college was later changed to the Faculty of Fisheries.

The faculty admitted its first students in 1989. The new institution presently employs 25 academic staff.

The faculty mainly aims to train prospective engineers of fisheries, equipped with knowledge enabling them to work in various fields of fisheries, improve the level of knowledge of technical personnel by means of courses and seminars, and conduct research and experiments which will contribute to solutions of regional and national problems.

The students also have the opportunity to do practical training during summer term on the campus and/or at the Sea Fish and Crustacean Production Farm in Yumurtalik, which is a sea resort town in the province of Adana.

The Faculty of Medicine

The Faculty of Medicine

The Faculty of Medicine was founded in 1972 as an institution connected to Ataturk University. In 1973, the faculty was handed over to the newly-established Çukurova University.

During the first few years after its foundation, education was carried out in the barracks of the Health Center Institute and in the 200-bed Numune Hospital, located in the city center. The Basic Medical Sciences was moved to the campus in 1977, and by 1987 most medical services were already available in the hospital, which is also on the campus. At present, 501 academic staff are employed.

The faculty has a center for research and application funded by the faculty itself, multidisciplinary labs, an emergency service and first aid, a pharmacy, a blood center, a modern and fully-equipped central operating theater, and central laboratories. The Balcalı Hospital

The hospital of the Faculty of Medicine, with its 850 beds, and equipped with the latest technological equipment, provides a high standard medical service for people mostly from southern and south-eastern regions of Turkey. The number of beds will increase up to 1200 following the completion of the extension building. Services in all units such as laboratories, pharmacy, blood center, patient admission rooms, and accounting are all given through computers. The hospital has study halls, a library, a conference hall (for up to 200 people), a canteen, and a cafeteria which caters for all academic and administrative staff as well as for students.

The Faculty of Agriculture

The Faculty of Agriculture

The Faculty of Agriculture was founded in Adana in 1969 as an institution of Ankara University. In 1973, the faculty was taken over by Çukurova University. The faculty has 243 teaching staff. Besides the research centers of each department, the faculty has well-equipped laboratories and greenhouses to efficiently carry out application of courses and meet the needs of undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate students, research assistants and other researchers.

Based on contracts of cooperation, the faculty is in close relation with certain international agricultural education and research institutions as well as some

Universities in Germany, France, The USA, Poland, Spain, The UK, Syria, and Italy. Based on this global relation, the exchange of both students and scientists is possible.

The students receive applied education on a 1000-hectare Research and Application Farm, where applied agricultural researches are conducted to contribute to solutions of basic research problems and other problems faced by crop producers and agricultural institutions.

Moreover, the faculty funnels some of its income from its Research and Application Farm for the coverage of some educational and research expenses.

Since 1987, the faculty has carried out intensive research and activities in accordance with the contract signed by Southeast Anotalian Development Project Board in order to make better use of the agricultural potential expected to emerge in the region due to irrigation. The Harvest

Colleges

The Health College of Adana

Founded as the Adana College of Health Services in 1992, the college was renamed as the Health College of Adana in 1997. The college is located next to the Numune Hospital in the city center, and provides a four-year undergraduate program in midwifery and nursery care.

The College of Physical Education and Sports

The college, located on the campus, started its first academic year in 1987 as a department of the Faculty of Education having the title of the Physical Education and Sports Instruction Department.

In 1995, it was turned into the College of Physical Education and Sports, and providing a four-year graduate program in physical education and sports instruction. The college has 15 academic staff providing education for 218 students. The graduates are entitled to be sports instructors in educational institutions, as well as sports experts, managers and trainers in state and private institutions.

The College of Tourism and Hotel Management

When completed, the college will provide a four-year graduate education in Karatas.

The Vocational College of Adana

The college, founded in 1989 and located on the campus, started its first academic year in 1990, and presently provides a two-year undergraduate program in computer programming, mining, climatization and textile.

Aiming to train intermediary personnel to provide communication between the engineers and technicians, the college has mining, climatization, and textile laboratories, as well as computer rooms, all open to students.

A total of 213 students receive education carried out by four permanent teaching staff members and occasionally by others notably from the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture and/or other departments. Students graduate from this faculty as technicians, and may find jobs in banks, private schools, and other different public and private sectors.

The Vocational College of Ceyhan

The Vocational College of Ceyhan offers four main courses: Machinery, Construction, Electric and Marketing. Established by the Ministry of Education in 1976, the school was connected to Çukurova University in 1982. It is located in Ceyhan, 50 km from Adana. With its teaching staff of 25 members, it educates 849 students, 584 of whom are regular and 265 are evening-classes students.

The school provides each course with two classrooms, bookcases, drawing and printing rooms, computer rooms, laboratories, a conference hall, a 150-hectare plant production unit and workshops. There is also a wide-range of sports facilities available for all students.

The Student Loan & Accommodation Institution has built two dormitories, one of which presently serves up to 200 male students, and the other, very recently built (1997), provides accommodation for 760 male and female students. A Provide-Support Association sponsored the building of another dormitory housing 100 female students.

The Vocational College of Kadirli

The college offers two educational programs: Computer Programming and Industrial Electronics. It was founded in Kadirli, 102 km northeastern of Adana, in 1997. The college started education with 20 students in 1997-1998 academic year.

The Vocational College of Karaisali

The college offers two educational programs: Computer Programming and Mining. It was founded in 1995, and with its own academic lecturers and other instructors from various faculties, it educates 39 students. The college is located in Karaisali, 47 km north of Adana. It has technical drawing rooms, computers and mineralogy, petrography and mining laboratories. In addition, it has a dormitory which houses up to 100 students, a cafeteria, a canteen and various sports facilities.

The Vocational College of Kozan

Founded in 1992, the college started education in 1993 with two programs: Office Management, and Secretarial Training and Computer Programming. The college is located in Kozan, situated 70 km north-east of Adana. It has a computer lab linked to the Network System, a typewriting lab, a library and a study room holding 75 students. All course opportunities are offered to students by the school's own staff. Students also have the opportunity to do practical training in private institutions.

The Vocational College of Osmaniye

Established in 1976, the college was connected to Çukurova University in 1981. It is located in two different places: Osmaniye city center and Fakiutagi Campus. It offers four programs: Mechanics, Ceramics, Environmental Engineering and Accounting.

The Departments of Construction, Electricity and Mechanics are included in the Project of Industrial Education sponsored by YÖK (National Higher Education Council) and the World Bank. A teaching staff of 34 offers courses to a total number of 1256 students, 850 of whom are regular and 417 are in evening classes.

On its campus, the college has dormitories, laboratories, workshops, computer rooms and foreign language learning labs, as well as basketball and volleyball courts, football fields, a canteen, a meeting room and a library.

The Vocational College of Health Services

Founded in 1989, and located on the Balcali Campus, the college provides four programs: Anesthesiology, Radiology, Medical Documentation and Secretarial Training. It started education in the 1990-91 academic year, and trains Health assistant candidates in theoretical courses supported by summer term practical training.

A total number of 333 students are educated by lecturers from various faculties and units, especially from the Faculty of Medicine. Graduate students are qualified as Health Technicians and have the opportunity to work in any state or private health institutions.
